Your first visit
What to expect from your referral to your first appointment with one of our urologists, and how to prepare.
Your referral
Your family doctor or nurse practitioner sends a referral to the office of one of our urologists. As per OHIP guidelines, appointments are by referral only.
Booking your appointment
Your urologist's office will contact you by phone, email or text message with your appointment date and time, and tell you whether your visit will be in person or by telephone or video. Make sure your referring doctor's office has your current phone number and email address.
Wait times vary depending on the underlying problem and how urgent it is.
Before you come
Please bring:
- Your Ontario health card
- A list of all your medications, including blood thinners, and any allergies
- Results or reports of recent tests or imaging, if you have them
- Glasses or hearing aids, if you use them
- A family member or trusted friend to help translate, if you are not comfortable speaking English
Your urologist may want a urine sample or a urine flow test. Unless your office tells you otherwise, try to arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
At your appointment
Check in at your urologist's office in the Medical Mall at SHN Centenary hospital (directions and parking). Your urologist will ask about your symptoms and medical history and may examine you. Simple tests, such as a urine test, a urine flow test or a bladder scan, may be done at the same visit. Clinics can run late, so please allow extra time.
After your appointment
Your urologist will explain the plan, which may include blood tests, imaging or a procedure. A follow-up visit is booked to review your results, in person or virtually. Your urologist also sends a consultation letter to your referring doctor.
