Conditions we treat
Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a minor procedure for permanent birth control. It is done under local anesthetic, and you go home the same day.
Before you decide
A vasectomy should be considered permanent. A reversal procedure exists, but there is no guarantee that it will work. Your urologist will discuss the procedure with you before it is booked.
The procedure
- Our urologists use a no-scalpel technique.
- You are awake, and the scrotum is frozen with local anesthetic.
- The procedure typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, and you go home the same day. It is best to have someone drive you home.
Recovery
- Rest for about 48 hours, using an ice pack on the scrotum, over your underwear, on and off.
- Most people return to work about 48 hours after the procedure.
- Avoid heavy lifting, sports and sexual activity for 1 week.
- You may shower the day after, but avoid baths and swimming for 2 weeks.
Confirming that it worked
You will need a semen test about 2 weeks before a follow-up visit 3 months after your vasectomy. Keep using other birth control until your urologist tells you the result is successful.
Appointments
Appointments are by referral
Ask your family doctor or nurse practitioner to send a referral to the office of one of our urologists.
