Self care

Some urological conditions can be treated with natural health products.

The good news

Several urological conditions can be safely and effectively treated with non-prescription natural health products.

The less good news

The internet is full of unhelpful, ineffective and unsafe recommendations.

Natural Health Products (NHPs) have a role in managing urological conditions like recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Many of these products, which do not require a prescription, have demonstrated effectiveness in scientific studies.

Recurrent UTIs

Cranberry

Cranberry products have been used for decades to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections. Cranberry has been extensively studied and is supported by many urological association guidelines. Tablets or capsules are generally preferred to juice, which can be high in sugar. Products with a higher concentration of proanthocyanidin (PAC) may be more effective.

Recommended by the Canadian Urological Association, American Urological Association and European Association of Urology. Available at most pharmacies and health food stores.

Quercetin

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, offers potential benefits for chronic prostatitis and is supported by Canadian treatment guidelines. Its anti-inflammatory properties may relieve prostate inflammation, discomfort and urinary symptoms, and it may protect prostate tissue from oxidative stress.

Recommended by the Canadian Urological Association. Can be difficult to find in stores.

Saw palmetto

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a popular herbal remedy for an enlarged prostate. It is believed to work by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Some studies suggest it may improve urinary flow, reduce nighttime urination, and ease BPH symptoms, with a relatively good safety profile.

Recommended by the European Association of Urology. May not be available at all pharmacies.

Recurrent UTIs

D-mannose

D-mannose is a naturally occurring sugar that may help stop bacteria, particularly E. coli, from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract, reducing the likelihood of infection. Unlike antibiotics, which can lead to resistance and disrupt gut flora, it is a well-tolerated non-pharmaceutical option, and can be used alongside cranberry products.

Recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the European Association of Urology. May not be available at all pharmacies.
